On 20 December 2022, Maya Widmaier-Picasso, the eldest daughter of the artist, died in Paris of pulmonary complications at the age of 87. The news was confirmed by her son, Olivier Widmaier-Picasso.
First daughter of Pablo Picasso and Marie-Thérèse Walter, María de la Concepción, nicknamed Maya, was born in 1935. The subject of a series of portraits painted by the artist between 1938 and 1939, she later studied art history and specialised in the works of her father. She was decorated several times by the French state for her work, contributing to Picasso’s influence in the world.
An exhibition at the Picasso Museum opened until 31 December highlights the relationship between Picasso and his daughter on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the artist’s death.
