Art Basel Miami Beach 2013, European charm meets American ostentation

Miami, 10 December 2013, Art Media Agency (AMA). Art Basel Miami Beach officially opened to the public on 5 December, though – by this point – the event had already been open for a week, with its associated events expected to go on long after the official opening day. The event features no fewer than thirteen satellite events – Scope, Aqua, NADA, Pulse, Select, Untitled, Ink, Design, Context, Brazil, Russian Pavilion, Miami Project. Other highlights have included the opening of a building, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, to act as a dedicated space for the Jorge Pérez Collection. A number of vernissages have also featured, including those for three large exhibitions of private collection (Margulies, Rubell, de la Cruz), as well as those for several museums (including Bass and Wolfsonian). A tour of galleries was offered in the bustling Wynwood district. Suffice to say that between 5 and 8 December it was impossible to visit everything. As in previous years, the event was held at the Miami Beach Convention Center, an enormous building which would take visitors at least two days to fully explore. Like other international art fairs of the same stature, the event featured major galleries from across the world, exhibiting their finest pieces – all viewed by smartly-suited buyers, and eccentrically-styled artists. French galleries produced particularly high-quality stands, with notable contributors to the event including Almine Rech, who appeared last year at NADA (New Art Dealers Alliance, a satellite fair) – a gallery which, this year, made its first appearance at Art Basel. Parisian gallery Thaddaeus Ropac, who displayed a large painting, alongside a sculpture by Baselitz, and a drawing by Robert Longo. Art:Concept was another French gallery which stood out, presenting an installation by Richard Fauguet. Paris’s Perrotin gallery was also a prominent participant, choosing to dedicate...

Art fair UNTITLED announces its second show at Miami Beach

Miami Beach, 10 September 2013, Art Media Agency (AMA). The second edition of UNTITLED is to take place from 4 to 9 December 2013 at Miami Beach. The curatorial approach to this year’s fair emphasizes the viewer’s experience within the show, and the context of the works at each stand. The event is welcoming international galleries and not-for-profit spaces, located side by side in order to avoid any appearances of separation or dedicated facilities. The fair, curated by Omar Lopez-Chahoud, is proposing 85 exhibitors from 18 countries. The temporary pavilion that will hold the exhibition is located at South Beach. The architecture allows for a lot of natural light to enter the building, as well as an ocean...
