Soho’s Team Gallery opening on Sunday

New York City, 6 September 2012, Art Media Agency (AMA). From 16 September onwards, the Soho’s Team Gallery, which represents various artists such as Cory Arcangel, Alec Bag, and Ryan McGinley, will be open on Sunday, the day when its neighbours, – more and more numerous in the Lower East Side – open their doors to visitors. “It’s something we talked about and wanted to try since we moved into Soho” Miriam Katzeff, director of Team, said in the newspaper GaleristNY. “When we moved, Deitch [Projects on Wooster Street] were our neighbours and we called them. We only wanted to do it if they were going to do it too. There is this idea that people visit galleries outside of Chelsea on Sunday.” From now on, while the gallery is getting ready to remain open six days a week, Monday remains “a lost day” for the New York art circle. The gallery’s team has to be divided in two period of work: from Tuesday to Saturday and from Wednesday to Sunday; According to Ms Katzeff, again in GaleristNY, “It’s just an extra day for people to come to the gallery. Photographer Ryan McGinley sued in copyright case

New York, 12 July 2011, Art Media Agency (AMA). The artist Janine Gordon has taken legal action against her homologue Ryan McGinley in New York. Gordon accuses McGinley of illegally using 150 of her photographs in an advertising campaign. She is asking that Ryan McGinley be convicted of violation of copyright. The two photographers have often been exhibited together and, according to Artnet, “the trouble began nearly 10 years ago, when both Gordon and McGinley had exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art.” Gordon’s lawyer adds that “during the preparation and display of the Whitney exhibition in which he participated, [McGinley’s proximity to Gordon’s work] gave him total and complete access to view and examine the Gordon images featured in the 2002 Whitney Biennial,” as reported on the same website. The dispute was initiated by Janine Gordon, who declared that McGinley used the themes, subjects, light and composition of her images. She was especially angry at the fact that his work realises higher prices on the art market. Gordon is supported by curator Dan Cameron from the New Museum. The defendant denies that he copied Gordon’s works and affirms that the pictures do not resemble hers, although they feature the same ideas and concepts. The question is whether concepts and ideas are protected by copyright laws in the same way as tangible artworks. This is what the judges will have to decide in putting an end to the conflict. Traditional jurisprudence tends not to protect ideas, as creation would be impeded if this were the case. However, each law suit is different and it is not impossible that Ryan McGinley be found guilty. Janine Gordon is demanding $30,000 for each...
