David M. Rubenstein appointed chairman of the Smithsonian Institution

Cofounder of the Carlyle Group, an investment firm based in Washington DC, David M. Rubenstein has been elected chairman of the Smithsonian Institution, reports The Washington Post. Rubenstein, part of the institution’s board since 2009, succeeds John McCarter. In January this year, he donated $10 million to the National Museum of African American History and Culture, which then dedicated its main exhibition space to him, now known as the David M. Rubenstein History Galleries. Rubenstein is also board chair of Duke University and a board member of the University of Chicago, the Lincoln Center and the National Gallery of Art. The Smithsonian also appointed the founder of AOL, Steve Case, as vice chairman, and Risa J. Lavizzo-Mourey as president of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Pierre Huygue wins the Nasher Prize in Dallas

The Nasher Sculpture Centre in Dallas has chosen French artist Pierre Huygue as winner of the Nasher Prize, worth $100,000. The prize ceremony in Dallas has been scheduled for 1 April 2017, and the trophy is designed by Renzo Piano – who also constructed the Nasher Sculpture Centre. National Gallery of Art Canberra offers nude tours of James Turrell’s artwork

Beginning in April, artist Stuart Ringholt will lead three 50-person nudist museum tours of James Turrell’s retrospective at the National Gallery of Art in Canberra. According to the Huffington Post, who spoke with Ringholt about the project, this isn’t the first time that he has been in the nude with art lovers; the artist has led several nudist art tours around Australia, including at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney. Ringholt believes that Turrell’s use of colour, light, and space makes his art perfect for being viewed without clothing. “Naked, our whole body experiences colour,” he said. “Nudity frees the spirit…It is educational. Education through feeling.” Indeed, after a nude audience experienced one of his “Perceptual Cells” in Japan, Turrell himself became interested in having more nudists view his work, causing the museum to approach Ringholt. “To my knowledge a nude audience hasn’t been fully tested on Turrell,” he said. “I am looking forward to the experience of his Ganzfeld room Virtuality Squared and viewing the audience under the affects of the changing light...
