The art market as Jérôme de Noirmont sees it

Paris, 23 May 2013, Art Media Agency (AMA). On 21 March, gallery owners Jérôme and Emmanuelle de Noirmont announced the closing of their Parisian gallery located in the 8th district for twenty years, scheduled on 23 March. They explained their decision with the fact that current context of the art market in France does not allow galleries without international ambitions to develop. Since then, Jérôme de Noirmont started to build an outline of a project that he is currently holding. “We want to invent a new form of art display in order to stimulate creation and widen the public’s appreciation” he said. This will can be explained by a dichotomy of actual situation described by the art dealer as follows: on the one hand there are small structures that play the part of “laboratories” and on the other hand “mega-galleries”. For now he did not precise his plans but it is possible that the gallery’s closing was only an excuse for a “future development” that will find its place on the French art...

Special programming for summer exhibitions?

Paris, 12 July 2012, Art Media Agency (AMA). AMA wondered about the choice and impact of summer exhibitions for galleries. With an economic crisis in the background, galleries offer a more restricted number of exhibitions. The opportunities for artists already scheduled to appear are less frequent and the chances for artists to be represented are dwindling. In this climate, how galleries position themselves? Do they dare taking risks? Several of them opt for displaying a group show which allows to remain active without focusing on one specific artist. However, this less daring gamble can be used to “test” audiences’ reactions to an artist’s work and be the vector of a long-term involvement. The Atelier-Kunst(Spiel) Raum, which has been located in Berlin for a year, will be opened until 5 August. From 16 July 2012 onwards, Stefania Angelini, director of the place, offers a two-phased exhibition: first, a “work in progress” by Chilean artist Macarena Abarca Flores. During two weeks, the Chilean artist who received a grant from her home country will offer an open studio to audiences. Visitors will be able to observe this work in progress: from its genesis to its final exhibition. The second phase will be devoted to works created during the residency. Usually, this gallery does not offer many group shows (only two this year). However, for summer 2013, Stefania Angelini will organise a collective exhibition which will enable to attract a larger audience thanks to a larger choice of displayed works. It is important to know that the majority of Berlin galleries do not have a storefront but are located in higher floors or in courtyards’ back which means tourist have to search for the gallery. Therefore, the audience is composed of “regular” visitors, even if newcomers do search for these galleries. The gallery’s...

Jérôme de Noirmont Gallery presents A.R Penck’s 5th exhibition

Paris, 7 December 2011, Art Media Agency (AMA). Jérôme de Noirmont Gallery in Paris is currently hosting the exhibition, “Entre feu et glace”, dedicated to A.R Penck, until 7 January 2012. It is the artist’s fifth exhibition in the gallery since 1996, which presents his latest paintings, created from 1997 onwards, along with new pictorial researches between abstraction and figuration. The pieces also reflect confrontation of extremes from the artist’s point of view of the world today. In his piece Elementarkräfte, created in 2009, A.R Penck expresses heat from natural elements such as the sun and volcanoes, while in his work, Stadt im Winter (2007), he depicts the harshness of a winter city. Penck also claims that reality, although it can be plastic, emotional or historical, it can also appear between two opposite elements, instead of necessarily being between extremes. The exhibition has selected 23 paintings which indicate the plastic maturity of the German artist. Jérôme de Noirmont Gallery will participate at Arte Fiera Art First in Bologna from 27 to 30 January, and will feature works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Valérie Belin, Keith Haring, A.R Penck, Pierre and Gilles, Benjamin...
