French Interior designer Andrée Putman passed away

Paris, 21 January 2013, Art Media Agency (AMA). On 19 January 2013, French interior designer Andrée Putman died in her Parisian apartment at the age of 87. A major figure of design, she was famous for her simple but nevertheless audacious works both in France and abroad. She received many official commissions. At first she was intended to become a professional pianist and composer (a student of Francis Poulenc, she was awarded the first prize of the Conservatoire de Paris at the age of 19), but then suddenly she abandoned her music career. She turned to other projects (journalism, artwork collecting…), influenced by Jacques Putman, editor and art critic whom she married in 1958. Her taste for painting and architecture evolved as she regularly met with artists and intellectuals of the time such as Niki de Saint Phalle, Juliette Gréco, Samuel Beckett, Giacometti or César. Working alongside Denise Fayolle as an art director of the Prisunic shops introduces her to the world of interior design. Through the creation of her own design agency, Ecart, she re-edited objects and furniture from the 1930s, such as a school chair by Robert Mallet-Stevens, over 30,000 copies of which were sold.  Andrée Putman’s ambition was to defend easily accessible design. In 1984, she renovated the Morgans Hotel in New York, creating a daring black and white checked patterned-tiling, that became her benchmark and lead her to international recognition. The elegance and sobriety of her style seduced numerous hotels and big department stores, which hired her to renovate or create their interiors. In 1985, Jack Lang commissioned her for the decoration of his office, hence commencing a series of numerous officially commissioned projects. In 2011, an official retrospective of her work was held in...
