“Roman Vishniac Rediscovered” at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston

Influential Russian photographer, Roman Vishniac, will be exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, United States, until 3 January 2016. Roman Vishniac is renowned for his stark images of Jewish life in Eastern Europe, yet very little of his work was published or printed during his lifetime (1897–1990). The exhibition “Roman Vishniac Rediscovered” introduces Vishniac’s hugely diverse body of work—much of it only recently discovered. This exhibition repositions his iconic photographs of Eastern Europe within a broader context of social documentary photography. Over Vishniac’s five-decade career, he produced works ranging from European Modernism to colour photomicroscopy (taking photographs with a microscope)- the primary focus of his later life. Beginning as an amateur photographer in Berlin in the early 1920s, Vishniac took to the streets and experimented with new approaches to framing and composition. He documented the Nazi rise to power and photographed impoverished Jewish communities in Eastern Europe. In 1941, Vishniac fled to New York where he opened a portrait studio, recorded American Jewish communal and immigrant life, and invented photomicroscopy. In 1947, Vishniac returned to Europe to document Jewish displaced-persons camps, the ruins of Berlin, and efforts of Holocaust survivors to rebuild their...
