Third Ghetto Biennale begins

Port-Au-Prince, 20 November 2013, Art Media Agency (AMA). Entitled “Decentering the Market and Other Tales of Progress”, the 3rd Ghetto Biennale is to take place in Haiti’s Port-Au-Prince from 26 November until the 16 December 2013. Now in its third year, the Ghetto Biennale was established in December 2009 by Atis Rezistans, a group of Sculptors from Haiti’s Grand Rue district, who sought to establish an answer to the question: “What happens when First World art rubs up against Third World art? Does it bleed?”. In an increasingly globalised art world, the Ghetto Biennale was established to expose social, racial, class and geographical immobility. Voodoo at the Canadian Museum of Civilization

Gatineau, 2 November 2012, Art Media Agency (AMA). From 15 November 2012 through 23 February 2013, the Canadian Museum of Civilization offers to discover Haitian voodoo through the exhibition “Vodou” (Voodoo). Presented for the first time in Canada, the exhibition features over 300 objects come from the Marianne Lehmann collection, one of the most important in the world. Acclaimed as the major and most complete exhibition about voodoo art, it will enable the public to “discover the way the adepts of voodoo live and understand their own spiritual tradition”. Far away from the Hollywood clichés, this exhibition is intended to speak truthfully and faithfully for the story and current place of voodoo in everyday Haitian life. The objects on display are additionally accompanied by further information from the adepts of voodoo. Supported by the Haitian embassy to Canada, this exhibition aims at promoting the Haitian cultural work. Mario Benjamin at the Maison Revue Noire Gallery

Paris, 21 September 2012. Art Media Agency (AMA). The Maison Revue Noire Gallery will present a solo exhibition of 40 years old Haitian artist, Mario Benjamin, from 14 November 2012 to 23 February 2013. Both an installation and a performance maker, Mario Benjamin dedicates this exhibition to painting, that remains his work’s main feature and it’s inspired by fears we all have experienced at least once in our lives: childhood nightmares, life anguish and the fear of death. His paintings are like mirrors of his soul, for he was for some time put in the asylum. Some specially arranged rooms, such as the Chamber of childhood and the Chamber of fantasies, echo some aspects of everyone’s life. New charity sale record at Christie’s

New York, 23 September 2011, Art Media Agency (AMA). Christie’s recently organized a charity sale to raise money for Haiti and has now announced the number of sales they reached for this session: over $13.5 million. For this type of sale, Christie’s has reached a new record. With an estimate between $7.5 – 10.5 million, coordinators of this event, who were no other than Ben Stiller and David Zwirner, could consider themselves lucky. In total, 27 art pieces were presented, some of which were created especially for the event. The most important pieces, such as My moeder voor sy my moeder was (My mother before she became my mother) by Marlene Dumas was sold for $2 million and Deal-No Deal by Luc Tuymans was sold for $1.15 million. Ben Stiller and David Zwirner organize auction for Haiti

New York, 21 April 2011, Art Media Agency (AMA). Actor Ben Stiller and gallery owner David Zwirner are organizing an auction in aid of Haiti.  “Artists for Haiti”, which will take place at Christie’s on 22 September 2011, aims to collect money to fund the education of Haitain children, by e.g. creating schools, and support the medical system via organizations such as Architecture for Humanity, J/P Haitain Relief Organization, Partners in Health and Grameen Creative Lab. Prestigious artists such as Jasper Johns, Jeff Koons, Chris Ofili, Dan Flavin and Hiroshi Sugimoto have donated works Stiller is concerned about the Haitians’ situation and the Stiller Foundation’s object is to help those left destitute by the recent natural catastrophes.  Many celebrities have lately become involved in efforts to help Haiti.  After the Haitian earthquake, Naomi Campbell and Rachel Zoe, the stylist, organized a fashion show in aid of the relief effort....
