Robert Motherwell at Peggy Guggenheim

Venice, 24 June 2013, Art Media Agency (AMA). ’Robert Motherwell: Early Collages’ is currently on display in Venice until 8 September 2013. Motherwell was a leading figure of Abstract Expressionism in America. The exhibition at the Guggenheim presents 44 of works produced between 1941 and 1951, and examines the role which Peggy Guggenheim played in the early stages of his career in New York. Featured pieces include Figure with Blots (1943), Jeune Fille (1944) and View From a High Tower (1944-45).  Motherwell also produced paintings, but rapidly moved towards a practice focused on large-scale collage, describing the medium as ’the greatest of our discoveries’. Motherwell was born in Aberdeen, Washington in 1915, and died in Provincetown, Massachusetts, in 1991. His collages were first exhibited as part of ’Exhibition of Collage’ at Peggy Guggenheim’s New York-based ’Art of This Century’ gallery in 1943. The artist has since been the subject of several international restrospectives. After closing in September, the exhibition at Peggy Guggenheim is to travel to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, where it will  be on display from 27 September 2013 – 5 January 2014.  ...
