Dresden’s State Art Collections acquire a work by Kirchner

Dresden’s State Art Collections have recently acquired a work by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (Straßenbild vor dem Friseurladen, Street Scene in Front of the Hair Salon (1926)). This work had been stolen by the Nazis in the same museum almost 80 years ago. This information comes from Catherine Hickley (The Art Newspaper), who states that the museum purchased the painting from Galerie Henze & Ketterer in Berne (Switzerland) for an unknown sum. The 20th Anniversary of the Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst at Galerie Neue Meister

This year, the Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst in Dresden (Society for Modern Art in Dresden) celebrates its 20th anniversary, prompting Galerie Neue Meister to host an exhibition of contemporary art in tribute to the Society, on display until 2 November 2014. The Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst has purchased 45 works over the past twenty years which are on permanent loan to the gallery, including works by Marlene Dumas, Candida Höfer and Luc Tuymans. A particular focus of the collection is on works which have brought new energy to painting since the late-1990s, featuring artists including Johannes Kahrs, Peter Krauskopf and Sophia Schama.  The newer works purchased by the Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst create a dialogue with the gallery’s older collection, which dates back to the Romantic period. New director named for the Kunstgewerbemuseum, Dresden

Dresden, 6 January 2014, Art Media Agency (AMA). Tulga Beyerle has been appointed as the new director of the Kunstgewerbemuseum, the Museum of Decorative Arts, at Pillnitz Castle – one of the leading institutions for regional and international applied arts. Commenting on the appointment, Hartwig Fischer, the museum’s Director General, said he was “particularly please to welcome Tulga Beyerle as the new Director of the Kunstgewerbemuseum”. Born in 1964, Beyerle studied Industrial Design at Vienna’s Univeristy of Applied Arts. She has organised exhibitions for institutions in Vienna, Cologne, and Wien (the Wien Museum), and has contributed to projects including the ExperimentaDesign Biennale, Lisbon, and the annual Design Week, Vienna – for which she acted as Director. Beyerle began her new role on 1 January 2014, and has expressed her excitement in response to the opportunity. The First World War according to Otto Dix at the Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen, Dresden

Dresden, 10 December 2013, Art Media Agency (AMA). The Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen in Dresden, Germany, is offering an exhibition dedicated to artist Otto Dix, from 5 April until 13 July 2014. Entitled “Otto Dix. War – The Dresden Triptych”,  the show is to take place in the centenary year of the outbreak of WWI. For the occasion, the museum is offering the four panels by Dix, alongside a series of etchings entitled Der Krieg (War), which were published in 1924, as well as sketches and drawings from the artist’s time on the front. Ostrale ‘012 opening in Dresden

Dresden, 13 July 2012, Art Media Agency (AMA). From 13 July to 16 September 2012, the Ostrale ‘012 art festival is launching its sixth edition in Dresden, Germany. 245 artists, from 33 countries, will participate in this year’s edition. The event is taking place in the former slaughterhouses’ area, the Hans-Erlwein-Schlachthof, displaying over 15,000 m2 a variety of works, including photographs, paintings, installations, and visual artworks. This year, the festival is focusing on the “homegrown” topic, (what is self-cultivated). In line with this motto, American artist Emilie Brzezinski will be displaying her Family Trees work, sixteen sculptures of trees provided with family pictures. As stated by the MDR channel on 13 July, Australian Joseph Marr designed an edible sculpture. Moreover, the Ostrale programme will include performances, dancing, theatre pieces and the International Art Moves show, which will be displaying young artists. International Art Moves will take place for the second time, displaying this time works by students from Hong Kong, Croatia, Lebanon, and Peru.
