Auctions to watch in November

The autumn auction season is well and truly in swing as buyers look out for new pieces for their collections. All over the world — namely New York and London —, auctions presenting works by internationally renowned artists will shortly be held. On 10 November, David Bowie’s collection will be going on sale at Sotheby’s, New York, featuring Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Air Power, estimated at being worth $2 to 4 million, to be presented at a session on modern and contemporary art. Following this sale, Francis Bacon and Sol LeWitt works will be placed on sale, still in New York, on 15 November at Swann Auction Galleries; two days later, it will be the turn of emblematic pieces by Willem de Kooning and Georges Baselitz, back at Sotheby’s. The last major sale in November will also be held by the latter, on 22 and 23 November — an opportunity to acquire works by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, at a sale on Latin American modern...

Chtchoukine collection on show at the Fondation Louis Vuitton

The mythical art collection of Sergueï Chtchoukine has arrived at the Fondation Louis Vuitton. The exhibition, “Icônes de l’art moderne. La collection Chtchoukine”, opened on 22 October, and will continue until 20 February 2017 in Paris. Let’s remember that as of 1898, the Moscow industrialist formed ties with the greatest art dealers including Ambroise Vollard, Paul Durand-Ruel or Daniel Henry-Kahnweiler. At the same time, Chtchoukine became friends with artists Monet and Matisse, who painted the work La Danse for him. Placed at the centre of the artistic revolution thanks to his vast collection, Sergueï Chtchoukine had great influence on young Russian artists and on the formation of several movements such as constructivism and suprematism. This art lover wished to transmit his passion early on, aiming to share his collection with the masses. This was why he would open up his home to visitors several times a year. Out of the 278 pieces in the Chtchoukine collection, 127 works are currently on display at the Fondation Louis...

Over 30 automatons displayed at the Galerie Kugel, in Paris

The Galerie Kugel in Paris is presenting, from 9 September to 5 November, the first exhibition entirely devoted to Renaissance automaton figure clocks, thus gathering the largest ever collection. A menagerie of exotic animals will be unveiled, including lions, dromedaries, elephants, bears and monkeys. While animals dominate this automaton collection, unique figures also make an appearance, namely a Turk astride a horse, brandishing a scimitar, as well as bear and lion tamers. These objects combining art and sculpture, clockwork and sometimes woodwork, were mainly produced in Augsburg, a major German artistic centre at the...
