White Flag Projects closes its doors

After ten years, the St. Louis-based non-profit organisation, White Flag Projects, is closing its doors for good. Since opening in 2006, this cultural centre has welcomed 86 exhibitions, featuring nearly 375 artists. A ceremony is being organised on Saturday 29 October and a catalogue documenting its exhibitions in the last ten years will be published in 2017. This cultural space was also the venue of a number of events including Issues, offering access to periodicals otherwise inaccessible in the region, and A Film to be Determined, outdoor screenings of works by illustrious artists including Dan Graham, Peter Halley, James Hoff, Jacob Kassay, Ed Ruscha and Cindy...

The names of the new winners of the Praemium Imperiale were announced on 13 September in Paris at the Musée National des Arts Asiatiques-Guimet. Elizabeth Dee’s huge new New York space

New York gallerist Elizabeth Dee is presenting, from 29 October to 17 Deceber, “Every Future Has a Price: 30 Years after Infotainment”, an exhibition on art in the mass media, magazines and advertising. This iconic neo-Pop exhibition was originally set up 30 years ago by Anne Livet and artist Alan Belcher, as well as Peter Nagy, and travelled between 1985 and 1987 to the Texas Gallery in Houston, the Rhona Hoffman Gallery in Chicago, and the Aspen Art Museum, as well as Europe. The new version will feature 19 artists from the original exhibition, as well as works by Richard Prince, Cindy Sherman, Guerilla Girls and Christopher Wool. Cindy Sherman to play Maria Callas in Francesco Vezzoli film

Francesco Vezzoli has directed a film about the Greek singer Maria Callas in which Cindy Sherman is to play the title role. The film will be released in September 2015 in Athens. The film will be shown during a performance of Rufus Wainwright’s Prima Donna, an opera about the prospects of an ageing soprano. In Francesco Vezzoli‘s film, photographer Cindy Sherman will play an ageing Maria Callas, tying in with the themes of Wainwright’s work. The Italian director said, “The film depicts fictional, pivotal chapters of the singer’s life and career, in her full glory and darker situations, showing her fading away.” For the project Cindy Sherman had to wear costumes worn by the famous singer, lent by the Tirelli costumes archive in Rome. Justifying his choice to cast Cindy Sherman, Vezzoli said, “Of all postwar artists, she has explored human identity in all its facets in the deepest ways.” Francesco Vezzoli‘s works will be the subject of an exhibition at the Almine Rech Gallery from 8 September until 3 October 2015.
