Modigliani’s biographer arrested for counterfeiting

Leghorn, 3 January 2013, Art Media Agency (AMA). President of Leghorn artist Amedeo Modigliani’s legacy, Christian Gregori Parisot, was arrested by the Italian police authorities in late December 2012. The staff responsible for this cultural heritage has sequestered 59 works, including 41 drawings and 4 bronze sculptures, estimated around € 6.65m. Fake certificates of authenticity had been made for those counterfeited pieces, that were bound to be legally sold to the market by the artist’s main biographer. Authorities believe other counterfeits have already been circulated, probably around 100 pieces. The Roman Prosecutor’s Office and the police had previously launched an investigation in 2010, as 22 fake Modiglianis were removed from an exhibition housed by the Archaeological Museum of Palestrina. Amedeo Clemente Modigliani (1884-1920) was an Italian painter and sculptor related to the School of Paris. He was first known as a figurative painter, and then became famous with his “modern” paintings and sculptures, characterised by mask-like faces and form elongation....
