Sotheby’s to host sale of Gunter Sachs collection

London, 14 March 2012, Art Media Agency (AMA). Sotheby’s London is organising the sale of the collection of Gunter Sachs, the ex-husband of Brigitte Bardot. The sale will take place at the auction house’s London premises on 22 and 23 May 2012. A flamboyant millionaire, but also a recognised photographer and documentary maker, Gunter Sachs fed his passion for art through collecting. The sale will include 300 pieces, many of which are in the Pop Art style, which Sachs was particularly keen on. He was a personal friend of Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali. Among the 300 pieces featured in the sale there is a portrait by Andy Warhol of Brigitte Bardot (dated 1974, estimated value £4 million), a photograph by Richard Avedon (estimated value £40,000 – £60,000), Flowers by Warhol (estimated value £3-£4 million), as well as works by Tom Wesselmann and Roy Lichtenstein. Sachs commissioned many of these works himself or acquired them directly from the artists for his apartment in Switzerland. In 1972, during Warhol’s first large European exhibition in Hamburg, Sachs bought half of the works presented in order to spare the artist finding out that his works had been met by little enthusiasm from buyers.
