ArtBO takes on its 11th edition: An Interview with María Paz Gaviria Múñoz

ArtBO, the International Art Fair in Bogotá, Colombia, is opening it’s 11th edition of the fair from 1-4 October, 2015 at the Corferias Center. Under the directorship of María Paz Gaviria Múñoz, the fair aims to go beyond the commercialization of art and make art accessible to the public, regardless of experience. A graduate in Art History from Columbia University, the daughter of the former Colombian president César Gaviria, has been director of ArtBo since 2012. Art Media Agency went to meet with this powerful director and get the inside scoop on ArtBO’s latest edition. ArtBO was created in 2005. What are some of the new arrivals in this edition? The Chamber of Commerce in Bogotá first organized ArtBO, which has given the fair a different and unique focus. In terms of galleries we will have 84 galleries from 33 cities, selected by the selections committee and solo projects. I’m very excited about the fair in general because a lot of galleries we are hosting this year will be at the fair for the first time. Moreover, this year, we’re glad to present “SITIO”, which is a new space where galleries are able to propose works that don’t fit into the traditional format of the fair. Of course we have a room with video programming, performances, large-scale sculptures, and even projects around the city of Bogotá, and we’re really excited for this first round of the program. We’ll also make the fair available for viewing on live stream. We’re really excited about that as well. So ArtBO is not simply content with growing, but tries also to offer a more and more diversified approach to art? Absolutely. Last year we started a segment of the fair called “Referentes” (References), and it’s a really wonderful section. The fair has a...
