“Meeting Point” Exhibition at Cuadro Gallery, Dubai

In collaboration with Yay Gallery, Azerbaijan, Cuadro Gallery, Dubai will be hosting an exhibition entitled “Meeting Point”, displaying the work of four internationally-recognised Azerbaijani artists, from 15 September until 15 October 2015. Rashad Alakbarov, Orkhan Huseynov, Aida Mahmudova and Farid Rasulov will be showing recent work spanning a range of mediums, exploring the evolution of tradition, home and memory during a period of rapid modernisation and globalisation in Azerbaijan. Rashad Alakbarov will be displaying three new of his “shadow works” that refer to the duality and contradictions in Middle Eastern culture and tradition. His works, when placed in front of a source of light, are designed to cast a shadow that tells a story totally disassociated from the object itself. Orkhan Huseynov will exhibit four Plexiglas reliefs from his new series “Yusuf”, two of which feature verses from Surah Yusuf, a chapter in the Quran, and the remaining, images of a modern shirt, conveying the at once clashing and complimentary relationship between religion and modernity. Farid Rasulov will present two new sculptures from his latest body of work consisting of everyday objects that have been embellished with ornate wooden carvings. Aida Mahmudova’s work draws on a whole range of mediums to explore themes of memory and nostalgia. New gallery opens in Baku

Baku, 26 January 2012, Art Media Agency (AMA). A new art gallery opened in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, on 30 December 2011. Named “LN Art centre”, the gallery is under the management of artist Aysel Amirova and aims to promote local artists, to train new talent and to provide support to artists in organising exhibitions abroad. Artists will be selected by a jury. Azerbaijan is a former Soviet Republic, at the crossroads between Europe and Asia. The country is known for its dynamic contemporary art community, of which Azerbaijan’s minister of Culture and Tourism is to take full advantage of in the promotion of the country. This determination to promote Azerbaijan was manifested in France in April 2011, when the Baku Museum of Contemporary Art put on an exhibition at the Hôtel d’Évreux in Paris entitled “Modern Works from Azerbaijan, land of Fire”.
