Auctions to watch in November

The autumn auction season is well and truly in swing as buyers look out for new pieces for their collections. All over the world — namely New York and London —, auctions presenting works by internationally renowned artists will shortly be held. On 10 November, David Bowie’s collection will be going on sale at Sotheby’s, New York, featuring Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Air Power, estimated at being worth $2 to 4 million, to be presented at a session on modern and contemporary art. Following this sale, Francis Bacon and Sol LeWitt works will be placed on sale, still in New York, on 15 November at Swann Auction Galleries; two days later, it will be the turn of emblematic pieces by Willem de Kooning and Georges Baselitz, back at Sotheby’s. The last major sale in November will also be held by the latter, on 22 and 23 November — an opportunity to acquire works by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, at a sale on Latin American modern...

Caravaggio sparks a dispute among experts

A source of lawsuits involving art experts, the authenticity of a Caravaggio is being challenged once again — this time for a work on display at the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan, from 10 November to 5 February 2017. The painting, discovered in 2014 in a French attic, passed through the hands of Old Master paintings expert Éric Turquin in Paris, who estimated the work’s value at around €120 million. Since the announcement of this discovery, institutions have sought to protect the work. Fearing that it might join an international collection, the French state thus placed an export ban on it. This Caravaggio is considered to be the second lost copy of Judith Beheading Holofernes (1606-1607), a painting shown alongside other masterpieces in the Milanese museum’s collection — including The Supper at Emmaus (1605-1606), also by Caravaggio, and a copy of Mary Magdalene in Ecstasy, a work discovered in a private collection several years ago. The exhibition has been organised by Nicola Spinosa, a Caravaggio specialist and former director of the Museo di Capadimonte in Naples. But the display of this exceptional painting has raised opposition: art historian Giovanni Agosti has resigned from the museum’s advisory committee in protest, arguing that the Pinacoteca di Brera is helping the work’s current owner to push up its price by showing it. “Brera is a museum of the Italian state, not a commercial gallery or a banking foundation,” declared Agosti. “Presenting a painting in its rooms automatically confers authority on it.” James Bradburne, the museum’s director, defends his decision by explaining that presentation of the painting offers the public and experts to form their own opinions: “The French Judith will be shown with a ‘clear disclaimer’ that the attribution comes from the owner and not the museum. There is no ambiguity about...

Edgar Sarin wins the Bourse Révélations Emerige

As part of its exhibition “Une inconnue d’avance” from 4 to 20 November, curated by Gaël Charbau, the Bourse Révélations Emerige announced its winner on Thursday 3 November. Created in January 2014, the grant is an initiative conducted by the Emerige endowment fund in support of visual artists living in France, as yet unrepresented by any gallery. This unique Bourse — set up by Laurent Dumas — allows the winner to hold a first solo exhibition in an internationally renowned French gallery, and to receive financial support for his or her production of works. The third edition of the competition presented the works of twelve artists including two duos: Johanne Benaïnous and Elsa Parra, as well as Thomas Guillemet and Olivier Alexanian. During a ceremony organised at the Villa Emerige in Paris, Edgar Sarin, born in 1989 in Marseille, was named the new winner of the Bourse, and will be exhibited in 2017 at the Michel Rein gallery in...

Duplex sale: Between Paris and Marrakech

“This sale is the largest to be organised with Morocco in recent years, and the fruit of twelve months of meticulous research and selection from European and Middle Eastern collections”… Artcurial and the director of its Orientalist paintings department, Olivier Berman, are proud of the upcoming sale scheduled for 29 December. The French auction house is a pioneer in the organisation of cultural events in Morocco, convinced that “culture is a genuine engine for development in Morocco… The programme of the Musée Mohammed VI d’Art Moderne et Contemporain in Rabat, which since opening in 2014 has presented artists from all over the Maghreb region as well as retrospectives of Western artists, sets an excellent example for raising public awareness of art history.” The sale will be taking place in duplex between Paris and Marrakech, and will be preceded by an exhibition of the 80 works at the Palais Es Saadi in Marrakech. The Paris#Marrakech sale is made up of two chapters, bringing together Western and Middle Eastern works. The first chapter, titled Majorelle and His Contemporaries, will present works including a painting by Mohamed Melehi: Composition, dating from 1971 (estimated at between €40,000 and 50,000). The second chapter will be dedicated to international contemporary art, and present works by artists such as Bernard Buffet and Raoul Dufy. And for the first time in Morocco, street-art works drawing inspiration from calligraphy will be placed on sale, namely pieces by JonOne and eL...
