Welcoming over 20 million travellers each year, London’s Heathrow airport is to become the site of Slipstream, a new sculpture by artist Richard Wilson.
Measuring 78 metres in height, the monumental work weights 77 tonnes, and is to be installed in the airport’s new terminal 2, to be opened by the Queen on 23 June 2014.
Composed of fluid aluminium forms which meander through the terminal — intending to evoke flight — Slipstream is supported by four, 18 metre-high columns. Commenting on the work, Richard Wilson states “Slipstream is a metaphor for travel… it is a time-based work that responds to its location.”
The piece is the largest work to have been produced by the artist to date.
