Éric Gubel has been appointed to the head of the Royal Museums of Art and History (RMAH) in Brussels.
Officially formalised last Thursday by Philippe Courard, the Belgian State Secretary for Science Policy, Gubel takes over from Michel Draguet, who was RMAH’s interim Director for over three years. According to Belgian daily newspaper La Libre Belgique, Draguet was behind ambitious renovation plans for RMAH; the paper has speculated that he is to take up a position in Belgium’s Régie des Bâtiments (Buildings Agency).
At almost sixty years old, Éric Gubel is to bring a wealth of experience to the role of Director. Since 2000, he has been Chief Curator in RMAH’s antiques department. He previously worked for France’s Centre National pour le Recherche Scientifique, on their account with the Louvre, and has also worked with UNESCO. Holding a doctorate in History of Art and Archaeology, he is a specialist in Ancient Near Eastern studies.
