“Lace of Stars” is the title of a solo exhibition of works by Fariba Salma Alam, which is currently on display at New Delhi’s Shrine Empire Gallery.
The show, which is to continue until 11 January 2014, presents the artist’s photographs, video projections, textile works and installations. The central theme of Alam’s work is the fragmented female body, which is capable of transcending its own physicality, as well as the interaction between shadows, the silhouette, the foreground and space. The artist creates religious and secular allegories, using subjects such as migration and travel. The title of the exhibition is a reference to a constellation of stars, reminiscent of the Islamic parable The Night Journey, or Mir’aj, in which the prophet Mohammed journeys from Mecca to Jerusalem on the back of a creature which is half-horse, half-angel.
