Collector Christian Bouqueret died on 5 December 2013 after a long illness. In 2011 the Pompidou Centre acquired nearly 7,000 photographs from his collection, including shots by Man Ray, Henri Cartier-Bresson, André Kertesz, Brassaï, Dora Maar, Claude Cahun and Germaine Krull.
The president of the Pompidou Centre, Alain Seban, stated in a press release that “the Pompidou Centre has lost one of its loyal friends and benefactors, and the art world one of the greatest collectors of Modern French photography”.
“Through thirty years of hard and dedicated work, Christian Bouqueret assembled the greatest privately-owned French collections of the Modernist period,” added the institution.
