London’s Natioinal Portrait Gallery is to present “Janey Morris: Pre-Raphaelite Muse”, to take place between 12 November 2013 and 11 May 2014.
The exhibition marks the 100th anniversary (January 2014), of the death of Jane Burden, the wife of artist William Morris. Born in 1839 to a stableman and a laundress, the dark-haired, Pre-Raphaelite model features in several of the paintings of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, variously appearing as Pandora, Proserpine and Astarte.
A free exhibition is to present photographs by Frederick Hollyer and Emery Walker, depicting a close circle of friends including Rosalind Howard and Jane Cobden, and lovers Rossetti and Wilfred Scawen Blunt.
