Istambul, 17 September 2012. Art Media Agency (AMA).
From 12 September to 20 October 2012, the Rampa gallery based in Istambul presents the exhibition “Love and Other Matters” by the Turkish artist Servet Koçyiğit.
The exhibition’s main question is about the perception of romanticism, how emotions are being socialized and culturalized. In his work, Servet Koçyiğit clearly proves the opposition between feminity and masculinity in their perception of romanticism. The exhibition points out the different dimensions of his artistic practice and captures humourously the link between tradition and familiarity.
The life of Turkish people being familiar to him, he makes his exhibition a semantic map of relationships and codes, leading the audience to reflect. It is composed of videos, photographs and installations that transform the gallery into an imaginary house.
For instance, his work Sunset is made out of red lace where is written : ”Fuck You Sunset“. This message is a direct reference to those moments where the sun inevitably suggests to the heartbroken a melodrama scene.
