Taipei, 26 August 2011, Art Media Agency (AMA).
The 18th edition of Art Taipei fair officially opened today after its inaugural ceremony yesterday evening. It will run until 29 August at Taipei World Trade Center.
Art Taipei, formerly called the Taipei International Art Fair, was created in 1992 and is the oldest Asian art fair. In addition to Taiwanese and Chinese exhibitors, the fair will also highlight Korean, Japanese and Southern-Asian galleries, as well as European and North-American galleries. Chinese galleries have been more and more numerous since the 2000’s, and indeed, many Chinese artists will be highlighted. The art market has considerably evolved since the 1980’s in Taiwan. Taiwanese collectors are considered to be the best of the Asian continent in terms of quality and purchase.
The fair is organised by the Taiwan Art Gallery Association, an important actor on the Asian art market. Since 2004, numerous sections have been launched such as “Asia Live” and “Ela-Asia”, dedicated to digital art, as well as “Made in Taiwan–Young Artist Discovery”, that annually promotes a young Taiwanese artist on the international scene. In 2010 a new section entitled “Art Taipei PHOTO” opened.
This year, Art Taipei is expected to host 126 galleries – they were 111 last year – including numerous major international exhibitors.
