New York, 21 July 2011, Art Media Agency (AMA).
The Pop Art sale on the online auction website Artnet ended on 20 July 2011. Paintings, prints and sculptures completed by Pop masters such as Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Mel Ramos, Tom Wesselmann and Robert Rauschenberg were presented.
The most anticipated piece was Flowers by Andy Warhol, a rare blue and green silkscreen print in the possession of a private collector since 1994. It is part of a series of four paintings and was estimated at $1.1 million to $1.5 million.
Eleven bids were made and the painting sold for $1,322,500, a record for an online auction. This new record proves that major pieces can be sold on the Internet and that the dematerialisation of artworks is becoming increasingly successful.
Mrs. Yif Nif, 1986, a painted and chromium-plated steel sculpture completed by John Chamberlain, which was in the Douglas Cramer Collection, was estimated at $3 million to $3.5 million, but did not find a buyer. Further results are available on Artnet’s website.
