In 2010, Christie’s online sales of artworks and antiquities brought in $114 million, representing 16% of the house’s lots, but only 3% of the total sales. Christie’s offers its Internet clients items of lesser value such as watches, wine, engravings and jewels.
For the more expensive sales of paintings, sculpture and antiquities, buyers attend the actual sales or bid telephonically.
The major asset of Christie’s digital offer is that it attracts new clients. In 2010 the house drew many new bidders.
Art dealers participating in the VIP Art Fair, the first international online fair, also hope to attract new collectors.
