The Santa Monica Museum of Art is to become the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (ICA LA), and will be opening in a new Los Angeles district in spring 2017.
Once based at the Bergamot Station Art Centre, the museum will now be moving to the Downtown Arts District and renamed the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. In an open letter, Elsa Longhauser, the institution’s executive director, commented on this turning point in the museum’s history: “Our name and location may change, but what remains constant is the goal to reveal the vibrant, untold stories and pivotal moments in the history of contemporary art. Over its thirty-two-year history, the Santa Monica Museum of Art took pride in its courageous choices and singular point of view. ICA LA will continue to champion these core values through a renewed and expanded lens. As nascent Los Angeles art communities have reoriented around our city’s cultural centre of gravity, ICA LA is thrilled to be part of this seismic shift.”
