Thierry Raspail, artistic director of the Biennale de Lyon, is inviting Emma Lavigne as guest curator of the 14th edition from 20 September to 31 December 2017.
The Biennale de Lyon operates according to three-part cycles on a common theme, in the manner of a triptych. The 14th edition will be presenting the second episode on the theme “Moderne”, and will be curated by Emma Lavigne, at the head of the Centre Pompidou-Metz since 1 December 2015. An art historian by training, Emma Lavigne has long paid interest to the relationships between music, sound and contemporary art through exhibitions including “Electric Body” and “Espace Odyssée” (Cité de la Musique, Paris), questioning the notion of space in music, or else “Danser sa vie” (Centre Pompidou). She has also presented monographic exhibitions dedicated to figures on the music and artistic scenes including Chen Zhen, Christina Kubisch, Saâdane Afifandu and Christian Marclay. She curated the Pierre Huyghe retrospective at the Centre Pompidou before taking part in projects for the LACMA (Los Angeles) and the Ludwig Museum (Cologne).
As director of the Centre Pompidou-Metz, Emma Lavigne has curated the exhibition “Warhol Underground” and “Kimsooja — To Breathe”. She also curated the French pavilion at the last Venice Biennale: “Rêvolutions” featuring Céleste Boursier-Mougenot.
